about

The Piasa (pronounced PIE-a-saw) bird is a mythological creature that originated with the Mississippian people in south central Illinois. Rock wall drawings, which were documented by French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673, depicted the creature as a giant dragon/bird hybrid with human facial features.

In 1836, a professor who worked in the area published a “backstory” for the Piasa, which he eventually revealed was fabricated. It is his story that most people are familiar with to this day. He claimed that Piasa meant “the bird that devours men” in the language of the Illini tribe.

Attacks on Mississippian villages by the Piasa brought death and bloodshed. Victims were brought to its cave where, eventually, bones began piling up. Defensive assaults on the giant Piasa were ineffective, until Chief Ouatoga of the Illini tribe offered himself as a sacrifice while warriors ambushed the beast with poisoned arrows. It is believed that the Piasa was killed, although some believed it survived.

Today near Alton, Illinois (near St. Louis, Missouri), visitors can view a modern, large-scale painting of the Piasa on the side of a large bluff along the scenic Great River Road.

This EP is a sonic representation of this legend which lives on right across the river from where I call home in Missouri.
