Inside most of us, there is a little child who yearns to feel held, seen, heard, and loved. That little one inside may be kicking, screaming, acting out, or perhaps, he or she has given up and become quiet. I have met and interacted with so many children in my life and my work, including my own, and that has been the biggest of blessings. I have been ”forced” to look within and meet that sad and scared little girl inside of me, who desperately needed somebody to parent her. She needed to express all the pain, and the grief, the anger. She needed to know that nothing was her fault. She needed to feel held and safe. She needed to learn that she can trust people. She needed to feel that she is lovable exactly the way she is. But more than anything, she needed to play, be carefree, and have fun! That’s our job as adults, to become our own mothers and fathers. To give ourselves that which our parents perhaps couldn’t. To do that we need to meet the grief, the anger, and the shame, step by step. We need to play and have fun! And we need community, to feel that someone else has our back. Someplace where we can relax and let somebody else hold it together for us for a while. Nowadays I see the little child in everyone I meet, and that touches me deeply. I feel so much compassion for all the unloved children in this world, big and small.
